Abstract

The aim of this study was to explore the different reasons for breakdown of placements in family group homes. The influence of factors as child characteristics, parenting style, family composition, biological parents, environmental, organizational influence and matching was explored. Within 17 interviews with family house parents and eight interviews with behavioral therapists, 37 cases of breakdown were explored. Results demonstrate that the reason for breakdown could not be attributed to a specific factor; it was the combination of multiple factors. Matching was an important factor in the stability of a placement. Therefore, this research recommends taking the matching seriously whereby it should not be based on file information about the child. Wishes of biological parents, the child and family group home parents need to be taken into consideration. The involvement of stabile and objective third person during the placement can prevent the child of coming into a conflict of loyalties.
