Abstract

Abbé Grégoire was a French cleric, politician and republican who actively participated in the French Revolution. He is known because of his support for Jewish emancipation during the Revolution, for which he is still remembered positively in French society and historiography. However, his support for Jewish emancipation must be seen more critically as his ultimate goal of emancipation was the conversion of the Jews to Catholicism.
