Abstract
Focuses on Zora Neale Hurston's novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, which is widely regarded as a feminist novel, as the character of Janie regains her independence after being oppressed by men. This paper will argue, however, that the novel cannot solely be regarded as a feminist novel as there are aspects that conflict with feminist theory.
